Curricular Approach

_______________________________________________________
All JEC's curriculum pushes on changes in Jewish educational practice. While the focus almost always addresses Cleveland’s local needs – whether part-time Jewish educational settings, early childhood programs, or day schools – the work is happily shared with colleagues beyond Ohio.

Core principles infuse all of the work of the JEC's curriculum:

  • Focusing on big ideas of Jewish life; almost all curriculum was developed using Understanding by Design
  • Anchoring learning in traditional (and sometimes not so traditional) Jewish texts
  • Basing learning in constructivist theory - the teacher moves to role of facilitator so learners become empowered and engaged
  • Integrating technology

In the summer of 2021, with a shift in staffing, the JEC will no longer regularly create new curriculum. However:
  • Curriculum developed by the JEC continues to be available for free-and-immediate-download from the JECCMarketplace. [See the other tabs for this webpage for lists of materials.]
  • The JEC, through a generous grant from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, will continue supporting #OnwardHebrew.
